Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

Dear Sweet Community,

Wow, what a full week of yoga! I have loved seeing all of you sprinkled on the mat
and out in the world. I know I have been really craving taking classes myself and
always being the student as much as I can :)

Alignment Tip of The Week:

This past Friday we focused on Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana). This
is the easiest of the inversions and alignment in this pose will help with all inversions.
Start with feeling your hands on the ground and pull your palms back like you are
trying to drag the earth. Continue this effort up your arm and create the same action
in the shoulder blades; dragging them down the back. Bend your knees and tilt your
tailbone to the ceiling straightening your spine, draw the front of the ribs into
towards your back so that they support the straight line of the spine. Be careful,
avoid "hanging" in the flexibility of your shoulders support them with your ribs
and core. You may stay with your knees bent or straighten the legs. Heels should
not entirely touch the ground.  If down dog feels challenging try keeping your knees on the ground like Puppy Pose
or a modified down-dog.

Good work everyone with Downward Facing Dog this past week!

I look forward to seeing you all on the mat,

Sweet Day,

ARIEL

Hamstring Bundle & The Deep Back Line

Dear Sweet Community,

Alignment Tip of The Week:

This past week we wooed the hamstring bundle and the deep back line of the body. When stretching your hamstrings lying down, always make sure that the hip is moving away from the same shoulder and plugging into the earth. This will insure that the insertion of the hamstring by your sits bones will not tear. When standing, remember to keep that same alignment, hips level This will insure that you use the inner line of your legs which will support the insertions and attachment points of the hamstring.

Also, keep your weight on your toes in forward bending; to protect the insertion of the hamstring. And remember to keep a soft knee so that you don't over stretch/stress the attachment of the hamstring around the knee. Breath into your spend and that will stretch the back line-keep the integrity of the whole body :)
